Moon

Didn't have a tripod for this one, so had to rest the camera on a handrail. Also had to crank-up the ISO setting so it's a bit grainy. Like the overall effect though.
Heard a review of the new photography exhibition at Tate Modern "Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance & the Camera", until October 3 on Front Row on Radio 4 last week (should still be available on the iplayer), also a good review in the The Sunday Times. Sounds interesting. All about taking pictures
without permission.

The morning after the night before

Picture the scene... It's just before 8 am and I wander out onto the balcony of my room thinking about my morning dip. I look out over the bay and beach below and see what appears to be a bride in her wedding dress walking on the sand. By the time I get the camera she is on a jet ski (the groom is on the left). This is too good to miss so I head for the beach and take a number of shots. No sooner do I get there than this happens...
Yep, you guessed it another bride and groom appear, and someone who I assume is the official wedding photographer starts snapping away. Must be a Malta thing!

Tradition

My first paid sitter. Wandering around the historic area of Victoria the capital of Gozo, and came across this lovely lady sitting in the doorway of her home, producing traditional handmade lace. While I admire the level of craftsmanship, it's not quite my thing, so I declined to buy. However, we reached a compromise, I took this portrait of her working, and paid her for the privilege.

Home again

Back from a week away, though won't be at work until next Monday. Lots and lots of holiday snaps (like I would take 'holiday' snaps!) to be processed and uploaded. Made the switch to shooting primarily in RAW (though this one isn't!). Now I need to learn to use Canon's Digital Photo Professional. High resolution images on Flickr

Portrait Photography

No plans to go anywhere over the summer, so have signed up to return to art college (ECA) for a week in August. Already excited at the thought!

Portrait Photography:
"This course, aimed at individuals with a basic knowledge of photography, will explore the challenging but ultimately rewarding dynamics of portrait photography, working in the studio and out of doors. The emphasis is on picture creating and taking, rather than darkroom time, exploring lighting techniques, building greater compositional awareness and working with different types of cameras. You are required to bring either or both your traditional or digital SLR camera. During this week you will
• attain a basic understanding of studio portraiture, using professional models on
most days
• learn how to print successful high quality digital photographs
• develop your own individual style and approach to portraiture and learn how to light interiors."

A day indoors

A day for house painting, so wasn't allowed out. The one above is from yesterday (Newhaven Harbour). On holiday at the end of next week, so will be packing rods, flippers and camera.

Self expression

Specifically went in search of graffiti today. Not exactly difficult to find in the city. Seems to be a lot more than there used to be or is it simply that I'm now noticing it more. As a photographic subject, and as an outlet for individual self expression, I like it a lot. However, I suspect my view would be quite different (I'm thinking murderous rage and hanging's too good for the b*#stards!) if the canvas was my wall.
Lots more (colourful) stuff on Flickr

Sometimes things don't work out!

Now the intention was a bit of reportage, but it didn't quite go to plan. I blame the wine and the catering staff who insisted on refilling my glass at every opportunity. After the bash we also ended up in the pub. As the night went on the focus became a lot less clear. The one above I kinda like. It was taken early in the evening!
