The lighting on the Water of Leith this morning with the sun out and snow on the ground - brilliant! Had to be patient waiting for the sun to rise over the valley to light the figure.

The camera has been resting for the last two weeks. Weather has been rubbish so mostly time spent indoors. Out and about today taking advantage of sun, no wind and no work. Still some good Autumn colour, but in a mono mood. Particularly liked this shot which was taken from the aquaduct that carries the Edinburgh to Falkirk Canal over the Water of Leith. Liked the shapes and lighting, in particular the highlight area caused by the low sun shining through one of the arches that support the aquaduct.

Now I can't make-up my mind about the Lensbaby. Would these shots have been better if I'd used a conventional lens and then played in photoshop? At that point where considering acquiring more for the Lensbaby system, but wondering if my hard earned cash would be better spent elsewhere! Sequence taken at the Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh gradually appearing here. The low sun and quality of light was amazing. All taken between 2 and 4pm.

Anogia, Crete

There seems to be a lot of German tourists in Crete. I suppose that's not surprising given that they have the strongest currency in Europe. You won't see many in this village though! They have long memories here.

During WWII the mountain village of Anogia was the centre of Greek resistance to the Germans, who massacred all the men in the village in retaliation for their role in sheltering Allied troops and aiding in the kidnapping of the german general in command of Crete. The black shirts the men still wear (old and young) are a sign of their mourning.

It's a macho village where the Kafeneia on the main square (where this shot was taken) is frequented by moustachioed men, the older ones wearing traditional dress (baggy pants and headdress), the younger ones driving big black 4WD's.

Over two weeks the purple chair never moved, nor did I see anyone sitting in it. If I was to return next year I suspect it would still be there! The pace of life in Panormos is different from the pace of life in Edinburgh.
Dressings removed. Healing nicely though still some pain.

... is one of the last traditional Filo Masters in all of Greece. He makes super-fine pastry by hand in his traditional workshop. He has been doing this for over 60 years, ably assisted by his wife Katerina for the last 50. The Baklava and Kataifi is by far the best I have ever eaten. If you are ever in Rethymno, Crete, indulge yourself.
In a bit of discomfort today. Switched to the super strength pain killers.

All appeared to go well, but had an extended game of Hueeee as a result of the medication. Got x2 for the price of one (one point of entry). Seems the otherside had an undiagnosed second. Don't know about cuts(sic) but the ward staff were excellent (as well as consultants). High level of care and professionalism, as well as friendly approach in the face of some infuriating patients (yours truly for once not included). Respect NHS.

Got a bit pissed-off (sic) as they wouldn't let me go home until I produced 250cl at one standing.

Now I know in some quarters I am considered a bit of a piss-artist, but it took me until 8pm to do the required.

Home now with suitable drug selection to see me through recovery (x1 to x2 weeks).

For some the old Tory figure of hatred (to say nothing of the new) remains deep in their Scottish psyche. Chants of Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, Die, Die, Die from the misguided few was rather sad and pointless, and devalued the legitimate protests of the majority!

I’m back.

Relaxed, tanned and wondering (yet again) why I choose to live the way I do in a country that’s so cold. I love

Scotland

(and Edinburgh in particular) with a passion, but I also love the sun and in particular the pace and approach to life that tends to come with it. It was the first holiday in a very long time when I was dragging around photography kit with a degree of intent, though time and time again, I was easily distracted, particularly by food and drink and a level of hospitality that invariably included both.

A lot of pictures that need some time and thought to see if they make any kind of sense. Very few that could be termed ‘holiday’ snaps. I still don’t have the in-your-face confidence to take the street stuff that I’m after, though I’m trying. Still have a detail/composition obsession, particularly doors, windows, and decay, wherever I happen to be … what’s that all about!

The converted village house from two years ago was still on the market (I had a look then) and for a lot less. Am I tempted, you bet!

It's not actually a cafe, it's an antique lamp shop (note the price label on the lampshade). Have given it a slight tone to give an antique feel.

Lazy Sunday spent trying to sort out someone's laptop. Computers at times can really do your head in! You can, as I have just done spend hours trying to get someone's on-line email account to work with Outlook to no effect. The endless loop and no clear idea why the bloody thing won't work! Please no its-so-much-easier-on-a-Mac comments, or I may come round and kill you.
Postscript - After a long on-line conversation with a nice Sky person and trying lots of things - finally a result. Now the solution was totally different from their set-up instructions - No surprsie there then!!!

A colleague brought their Leica in today for me to have a look at. It was bequeathed to them in a relations Will. Now when I heard about this I was understandably excited, imagining a classic Rangefinder. However, like many things in life it proved to be a wee bit of a disappointment. It was one of the SLR type (early one I think), film not digital. Now I know the build and optics are second to none, but to my eyes it was an incredibly ugly beast, but worst of all it was so heavy almost to the point of being unusable (I certainly wouldn't want to lug it around)!
Now it's not that long to that time of year again ... Dear Santa ...
As an alternative, does anyone know roughly how much this little gem is likely to retail for?

Got some sampler business cards in the post today from www.moo.com . Even better than I expected. For those of you who don't know you can get a minimum of 50 cards all with different images on. It's like having a mini portfolio in your pocket. You can import directly from your Flickr account which makes the whole thing very easy.
Just another work day, primarily putting together a presentation for tomorrow for the new senior team. Ugly B and Mad Men on later. Not much else to say really!

Now I have been getting in a lot closer recently as my candid confidence grows. However, this was taken at 250mm and I still cropped significantly. Early Autumn in the Botanics sees the last of the flowers, but this lovely lady out bloomed the lot ... and just look at the concentration. She clocked me (though I don't think the camera), I smiled, I thanked her, and went in search of other opportunities. I will be back in the Spring.

It was the World Duathlon Championships in Edinburgh last weekend. For the elite that's 10k running, 40k on the bike, then another 5k running, all in under 2 hours. As the commentator pointed out anyone could take up Duathlon. You may prove to be crap, but if you had the cash you could go out and buy one of these beauties and at least look the part. For me a serious case of wheel envy!

Well it’s been a quiet time on the blogging front, because it has been a busy time on the festivals front, as well as on the over indulgent front. Starting to wind down now with the end of the Fringe and our fair city getting slowly back to some kind of normality. Photographs starting to reflect quieter times (no more pictures of the bright young things on the High Street for a start). Some almost gloomy, with the slight chill in the air and the days getting visibly shorter. A calmer time. After a busy summer, a time for contemplation, re-assessment and future plans.

Printing heaven

Does anyone want to off load a copy of Photoshop CS4 (PC version) or do you know anyone else who does?! Absolutely love it now that I have a better understanding of how to use it for photography, but balking at the cost.
Have been in printing heaven today, and continuing to tweak and refine towards tomorrows exhibition. Take 8 photographers, an intensive week of thinking and doing nothing but photography - the results are absolutely amazing. So many different approaches and ideas. So many different ways of thinking and doing!
The above shot (not part of my final submission) looks brilliant (he said modestly!) printed at A4 on an A3 (semi-gloss) sheet. Smooth and soft as a babies bum!

Today at school was all about scanning and getting in about the Epson printers. I took this with an Olympus OM1 in April 1981 (who's a good boy that has all of his old negatives catalogued and filed - worth a gold star I would say). Even remember taking it in a friends parents garden at Tacket Wood Cottage, Totness, in Devon. The subject - one of their many moggies. It has been scanned using an Epson Perfection 4990 Film Scanner, then fiddled with in PS.

Back to school today. Much fun was had by all. Lots of toys to play with. Took a little while for me to get to grips with using an Imac for the first time this century. So much nicer than a PC - and the quality and clarity of that screen for post-processing! The mysteries of B&W and photoshop starting to be revealed. Challenging week ahead. Also a nice (and varied) bunch of fellow students from all over the place.

At the WESTON/wegman opening last night.

WESTON - There just aren't enough superlatives in the bumper book of superlatives to adequately describe this. The original prints (not the later reprints by Cole) from the whole of his career. Early stuff, Mexico, still life, nudes, early and late landscapes. Most of the iconic images are here. Wherever you are, this is one worth traveling to Edinburgh for (City Art Gallery, 31 July - 24 October 2010). Am I inspired, or do I just want to chuck all of my camera stuff in the bin (trash)!?
wegman - one for the dog lovers. Technically brilliant (especially the large format polaroid prints) but for me no comparison with The Master.
Can I suggest if you go, do the wegman first, have a relaxing lunch (at the City Art Gallery restaurant or across the road at the Fruitmarket Gallery http://fruitmarket.co.uk/), then ... WESTON ... take your time ... get up close ... you won't be disappointed!

In Glasgow this morning (Impland). Started to feel unwell on the train back. Day Surgery Unit pre-admission visit. Lots of forms to fill in, blood, urine (use of jam jar got a laugh - difficulty getting the lid off), blood pressure, weight, ECG, literature to tell you about before and after. No date yet. Hopefully soon as getting more uncomfortable!

The estate no longer has 61N or 62N. Our last 30SO is in London at an exhibition there. I do have two clients with 62N that are willing to consign with me. The price on the 62N image is $8000.

I will have to check on the Brett Weston Cracked Paint image as that photograph belongs to my brother. It is a large photograph and I think is priced around $25 to 30k. If you are interested I will check to see if my brother still has it.

All the images are getting more scarce and harder to find. I now see I need to update the sold out images on the site.

Took this soon after getting the Canon (February). Have started revisiting stuff that I don't feel I spent enough time processing at the time. I seem to be in a hell of a hurry to take. More time for reflection is required. Still struggling to find my direction/focus. Doing a lot of reading/looking in relation to the photographer greats. Seems not uncommon for images to have remained unprocessed or revisited/re-processed over time.

Well the no title no words thing didn’t last long!

Not much happening really. Well I suppose there is in the arts world, but I can’ t really be bothered talking about work (currently it’s me time and not something I want to be thinking about). Film Festival ongoing this week. Some good stuff, opportunity to see some (passes), but I tend to wait until they are shown at the Filmhouse over the coming months All of the various Edinburgh Festival programmes have now appeared (apart from the visual arts one) which is great. I ignore the indigestible Fringe until the reviews start. Taking time to work through the rest and mark-up what I want to see/do. You have to be quick of the mark these days as some stuff sells out very quickly (popular/populist). Maybe I should start a recommendations section – probably little point as it would end up being what I like which may not be what others like, though you couldn’t go wrong (assuming you like high energy dance and the Gershwins) with Grupo Corpo and Porgy & Bess (both in the Edinburgh International Festival). Also the programme at Dancebase is usually good if you like modern dance in bite size chunks.

It has slowly dawned on me that there are five elements to this blog (no sh*t Sherlock!):

The image, the title, the blurb that I write, and the comments (which may/may not, be a response to one or more of the first three) & my response to these comments. These elements may/may not relate to each other, and could influence the view of the blog overall. For the next period I intend to stick to images only (i.e. no title, no blurb about my day or anything else). I’m keen to get comments on the images (subject, composition, approach, technical, emotional response, etc). I usually know why I have chosen to post this or that, which could be for a very specific or for a number of reasons. What I’m keen to know is what the image says to anyone viewing it (something/nothing). I will (if appropriate) respond to any comments.

What has sparked these thoughts is the sometimes difficult relationship between image and words. A good example is a Helmut Newton photo that I was looking at recently where the image appeared to be leading viewers (or was it just me?) to a conclusion that was completely turned on its head when you read the title (or was it? – I get the impression Mr Newton liked mind games and messing with the viewers perception!)

These days you find them in every city and town in Scotland. Shops that have gone out of business and are up for sale. Suspect this one will be on the market for a while. Can't see that the charities will even be interested.
Lots of system problems at work today (also yesterday). Something to do with rationalisation/system alterations as part of the preparations for CS which is to launch on 1 July. You realise how dependent on technology the modern office has become when you can't access the servers or your email for over 4 hours, and everything grinds to a halt.

Americans have arrested the whistleblower (an intelligence officer with a conscience!) and are (according to Saturday's Guardian) on the hunt for the founder of WikiLeaks an Australian by the name of Julian Assange.

What an exciting day today. New Chair and Board of Creative Scotland announced – most interesting!

Personal news – had already signed up for photography thing at ECA during August (Portrait Photography). Received an offer that I couldn’t refuse. Buy one (I had) get one half price - so I'm now also now doing Photoshop for Photographers: black and white digital prints (personal brief/project, research, create, process and print a series of black and white exhibition standard prints).

Also today, lunch including wine with the ladies (Doreen, Margaret and Linda).

Ambition Roadshow. Interesting keynote (as always) from Bill Thomson and couple of good case studies (Twittering Tate & Edinburgh Festivals). Also first reactions in the press and in conversation to yesterdays CS announcements . BB started (always watch the first one, then that’s it), usual bunch of wannabees, freaks and the delusional, who ultimately prove to be far less interesting than they think they are – clocked what looks suspiciously like Timorous Beastie wallpaper in the house. Just finished Boy Racer by Mark Cavendish. Can't wait for July and Le Tour. Cav for the sprints and possible green jersey, Wiggins for the overall (well maybe not quite yet!).

Big news (in the arts in

) today is the announcement of the senior team for Creative Scotland. Great to hear that Iain is one of them.

At Little France to have the latest sign of physical decay checked out, have a chat, and to get an operation date. Nothing serious, but a bit of a shock to hear that even though it's keyhole I'll be out of action for 2 weeks +. Also went to give one of my eight for somebody else, but they didn't want any - nurse said if I'm going under the knife in ten weeks I'll need to have a full tank.

Did you know that there is a loophole in Manx law (Isle of Man) that says, that you can shoot a Scot, as long as he is on the beach and wearing tartan. I understand that no-one has to date actually taken the opportunity, but I'm taking no chances and won't be visiting anytime soon. Well things didn't quite go as planned. I should have been back yesterday from my latest travels but wasn't infact back until this evening. I'm afraid the person who arranged my travel got a wee bit confused over week and weekend train timetables. The result was that I missed the only Sunday train so had to spend another night. On the plus side the rain eventually went off and I went exploring with camera. Some to be posted here over the next week, with the majority (once processed, as I've now become a bit of a RAW nut) on Flickr.
